Best to not buy into this scam

I don't remember entering into a contest for bestbuy.ca, but I received the following text message today:

"Congratulations, your mobile number has made you a winner! Goto http://www.bestbuy.ca.wonacontest.com to claim your prize! You have 24 hours to claim your prize."
If it sounds too good to be true? It probably is.  Look at this phishing web site URL closely.  Look closelier.  NOW you see it.  bestbuy.ca.wonacontest.com is not bestbuy.ca, it's wonacontest.com, which is clearly a scam website.  I think they text you and call at the same time.  The text came from 1-347-821-8805, which 800notes.com says is sketchy and used for other things as well.  Do not believe this.  scam.

Maybe an hour later I received a phone call from 1-866-858-7429, which seems to want to pretend to be shaw cable.  Which it probably isn't.  Said the call originated in the USA, which I found odd but could just be my cell phone's configuration.

For more infocheck out 800notes.com.   Don't get tricked.  Basically, if they have an Indian accent, they're totally scammers.

  9. Just got this text... I assumed it was BS. The number I got this from was: 1-347-819-2679. I live in Ontario, Canada... It's almost 1am. I'm sure Best Buy would text me this late at night. (note sarcasm). Thanks for posting... Just checking to get more info about these jackasses should anyone I know get the same.

  20. "Congratulations, your number made you BestBuy's winner of the day! Goto http://www.bestbuy.ca.wonacontest.com to claim your prize! You have 24 hours to claim" was the message I received at 3:59 AM (which woke me up btw). The number was from: 1 212 729-1744 (212 is a New York area code).

I knew it wasn't best buy right away because I never give out my cell number. Also, my phone told me that there was an error and the URL couldn't be shown. I've never had a message like that pop up before.

Thank you for having this warning on your blog. It was one of the first links I found when I searched for that website.

  22. Just to pipe in, I got this message today too (June 04 2012) - in Ottawa, Canada at a 613 cell number. Googled the email address they gave and found this forum.

Wasn't home so I don't know about the follow up call, but I do recall getting a call from 'Microsoft' last week to warn me about a major computer infection on my computer. Thick Indian accent on the call. I'm Desi too, so I told him in my best thick Indian accent that and he transferred me to a 'senior technician" who asked me what version of Windows I was using, so I spelled it out U-B-U-N-T-U to him. As an FYI, saying "Goo khalo, chamar" then hang up. (read it just as its spelled - means "eat crap, idiot" - might as well have some fun with it.

  23. I also live in Canada and got a text a couple hours ago from 1-917-756-6472 stating the same thing. I kind of wondered if it was legit, just because I did buy my phone from Best Buy, but when I went to the site, it took me to wonacontest.com, which is very obviously not Best Buy. Thanks for the info!!

  24. Thank you for everyone posting on this sight. I also had same message, and always suspicious when anyone wants my full name, address. birth date, numbers, etc. and wanting to know if I have credit card debt over $10,000.00. Why would they want this info to give you a $1,000.00 prize???
This may be identity theft and it is not part of bestBuy. Never give out personal info to an unknown sight.

  30. Hi everyone,
I live in Toronto. I've got the same text message one June 05, 2012 from 718 974 1510. I phoned the number, but it went to a voice mail which had not been initialized. I am glad that I googled the link given in the text. It is definitely a fraudulent one.

Here is the text that I received:
"Congratulations, your number made you BestBuy's winner of the day! Go to http://www.bestbuy.ca.woncontest.com to claim your prize! You have 24 hours to claim."
